CONCEPT OF RECREATION

Recreation can be defined as passive or active sports and fitness activities done during one's leisure time (free time) usually for fun and enjoyment which is done voluntarily, without any monetary gains attached to it. for it to be a recreational activity, there are four (4) major characteristics that should be exhibited by the individual engaged in it as listed below;

CHARACTERISTICS OF RECREATION
1. It should be done during one's Leisure Time
2. It should be Fun and Enjoyable
3. It must be done Voluntarily
4. There shouldn't be Monetary Gains
5. It is mostly related but not limited to Sports, Fitness and Gaming
6. It can either be Passive or Active in nature
Once all of these characteristics are checked, such activity can be called recreation.
Types of Recreation
There are two different ways of classifying recreational activities;
1. By Activity: This can be either active or passive recreation.
a. Active Recreation refers to activities an individual uses large portions of the muscle. It can be an aerobic or anaerobic activity which will likely induce sweating, increase in resting heart rate, Increase in breathing, among others. Example of active recreational activities includes; jogging, playing basketball, swimming, kayaking, surfing, playing tennis, e.t.c
b. Passive Recreation refers to activities an individual does not utilize large muscle groups. It mostly does not influence the resting heart rate or blood pressure significantly. Examples includes watching a football match, watching a movie, playing video games with a console or on mobile, playing card or board games, e.t.c.
2. By Location: This can either be indoors or outdoors
a. Indoor Recreational Activities: As the name implies, this type of recreational activity is usually done indoors. It is mostly passive in nature. Example of indoor recreation includes watching a movie at the cinema, playing chess, family games, playing board games and cards, arm wrestling, bowling, gymnastics, dancing, yoga, Pilates exercises, weight lifting, playing squash among others.
b. Outdoor Recreational Activities: This refers to activities done outdoors. This is mostly active in nature. Examples of outdoor recreational activities includes, jogging, cycling, hiking, mountain climbing, playing football, playing tennis, hunting, surfing, road walking, playing in the park, camping, among others.
